Poverty is a very real problem our society faces today, when we think of poverty we often think of people in third world countries but there is poverty in frist world nations like Australia. She realised she wasn't the only one who could become hungry enough to steal, she gave the family some money because of her experiences. When Ping was in the marketplace in Chang'an her bag was stolen by a thief with all of her money in it, she tracked the thief down and when she found him he was about her age and living in a slum with a family to feed.

Ping's isolation mean't she didn't know much about human interaction and kindness so was always learning and having to figure out how to act. Slavery was an unfair and inhumane system in which the poorest or most discriminated people were forced be 'sold' to others to survive, luckily it has been abolished although there are still some slaves today. Slavery was common in the context the book is set in (the Han dynasty) and slaves were treated very poorly, in the book Ping's master got Ping to do all of his work for him as well as helping him with all of his wants and needs (like cooking dinner, cleaning up, getting alcohol). Ping started her life out as a slave so had to make major adjustments to her view on things and people, she was also isolated at Huangling so she never came in contact with many people so her experiences were limited. She developed more of a friendship with Danzi, at first he was very conservative about what he would share but Ping managed to wriggle some stories out of him and became better friends with him because of it. Throughout the book Ping made many new friends and enjoyed their kindness and company. They gave her a meal and when she offered to wash up they refused, they also gave her some new cloths which Ping though were too nice for her but when forced to enjoyed wearing. The second night Ping and Danzi spent on their journey some peasants offered for them to stay with them for the night and they were kinder to Ping than anyone at Huangling had ever been.
They were faced with life-threatening situations which says something about their ability to push through problems which is something we all need to be ale to do in life.Īt the start of the book Ping didn't even think she deserved a name but she gradually gained respect for herself through her achievements and the kindness of others. There were many problems/conflicts which the characters had to face in order to reach their goal, they overcame the issue at had every time and gained new respect for themselves each time(especially Ping).
